Gridlock-K2 1.0
At the end of the documentation for every WordPress theme or plugin I create, I have a Thanks section. In every Thanks section, there’s one line that stays there regardless of who else needs thanks: “The WordPress community. You guys rock.” I’ve always felt that the WordPress community was a perfect example of the open source community at work, perpetually evolving the code of others into something greater.
This philosophy of mine came full circle after Caner Uguz, a user of the Gridlock theme for WordPress, e-mailed me only five days ago and asked if I’d allow a port of the Gridlock style to WordPress god (and fellow 9ruler) Michael Heilemann’s K2 WordPress theme. K2 is a wonderfully extensible system, vastly more so than Gridlock is, allowing for all sorts of mods, plugins, and with built-in support for AJAX search and commenting. While K2’s default style is certainly better-looking than the original Kubrick theme that comes with WordPress, it’s still very simple and very stock-looking.
While Caner wrote most of the CSS to port Gridlock’s primary creative feel to the K2 templating system, I stood by and acted as a creative director on the project, putting all of the finishing touches on site typography and colour. At the end of it, we were both happy with its look and now it’s being released here on hyalineskies for everyone to enjoy.
Gridlock-inspired, K2 approved
While Gridlock-K2 obviously takes its visual cues from its Gridlock parent, a lot of adaptation has taken place to fit the K2 theme. Gridlock’s left-aligned layout has been ditched for a centred one; sIFR has been abandoned to make Gridlock an almost CSS-only style for K2. Those familiar with K2 will see no loss of K2 functionality.
Bugs and support
Due to the fact that I actually didn’t write this style, you will probably want to e-mail Caner Uguz before e-mailing me, but I’ll do my best to answer support questions for the theme here on hyalineskies as well as via e-mail at eston@hyalineskies.com. If you find a bug, please include the browser you witnessed the bug in, and if you’re code inclined, we’ll also accept diff files.
This style for K2 is Copyright © 2006 Eston Bond and Caner Uguz under a Creative Commons By-NC 2.5 Licence. If you wish to licence this theme for commercial use, you may contact either Caner or I at the e-mail addresses in the previous paragraph.

Dude the zip file you are making available for download doesnt extract correctly. There are errors - can you check the archive? There appears to be a missing image too: I dont have an “about” image?
Just me?

I’m not sure what problems you’re having with the archive; it extracts fine for me using StuffIt Expander, the built-in OS X ZIP tool, and the Windows ZIP tool. I’ve recompressed and re-uploaded the ZIP. Tell me if you’re still having issues.

Thats what I get with winzip ..
It does appear to extract everything required to work good, just errors ..
Must just be winzip. I stole the missing About image from the Gridlock 1.4 archive. Sorted.

Yeah, the missing image was my fault, though. If you have any more issues, let me know.

the theme is great. i love it. the only problem i have is that i can’t change the header. how can I do that?
Eston

How do you want to change the header? Do you want to add an image or just change the title? Changing the title is done in your WordPress options. If you want to change it to use a graphic, it’s a bit more complex.

yeah, i want to use an image as header, i know how to change only the text.

Hi. Great theme. But I’m having a lot of trouble installing it. I get the same error as cjgavin when extracting and when when I upload the theme to my server, the WordPress system lists it as a broken template due to a missing style sheet…Can you tell me where I went wrong?
Thanks

Gridlock-K2 is not a standalone theme; you’ll need to install Michael Heilemann’s K2 first (you can get it here) and then install this style into the K2 styles directory. I have no idea what’s up with that ZIP error. Are you using WinZip too?

Hey Eston,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, now it works and I installed the new nightly builds because I had trouble with the live search on the original download. Now it works like a charm! I used it here
And, yes, I am using WinZip to extract the files…I don’t why errors keep showing up.
Thanks for this great theme and all your help.

The Un-zipping problem…WinRar gave me some interesting errors but WinZip did not. I think it has something to do with the Mac files that are included, since I’m using a PC I don’t think WinRar liked the mac files (ie .store files). Just a thought.

The theme looks great in Safari, but the main content forces the sidebar down in firefox since its too wide.

Do you have this installed in K2’s styles folder? If so, it should work fine. This is not a stand-alone WordPress theme.

hey eston,
i’m using gridlock-k2 and it works fine (and i love it), but since i have no clue of neither css nor php, i can’t figure out how to allow comments on static pages (the ones that are placed along the horicontal header menu).
i tried to get some simple kind of guestbook by using a static page and let people leave comments. but it doesn`t work ;-(
and is it possible to place images in the header? don’t know how, the K2-option doesn’t work…
thank you dude.

Can you point me in the right direction to getting an image as my header? Thanks.

By the way, I forgot to mention. Those who will play around with the CSS file note that an attribute that has a ” _ ” before it is relevant only to Internet Explorer.
like here:
_margin: … ;

I also have trouble while unzipping, 7zip on win XP here:
can not open output file (local drive)\Gridlock-K2 1.0\Icon
can not open output file (local drive)\_MACOSX\Gridlock-K2 1.0\._Icon
There seems to be a funny character at the end of “Icon ” and “._Icon ” that unzippers don’t know how to handle. Not a biggie but it would be nice if you could go over it once more. Thanks, great work!

Hello. I’m using and loving your theme! But want to know something? Theres a solution out there to trick the header with an image? The solution linked by Caner seems not to function anymore… I’m really starving to change the image header (more like to put an image in the header…)

Yes I was wondering how to change the header image as well. That site up there that Caner posted doesn’t have the page anymore. I go into Presentation > K2 Options and down on the bottom it has the ‘custom header’ but I cant click the browse button to upload an image to use as the new header. If anyone can help on changing header image that would be appreciated.

This theme is different with the other ones. You need to download k2 at http://getk2.com/download/ first, then upload the gridlock-k2 folder into the styles folder in your K2 directory. Once uploaded, log in to your WordPress administration page, navigate to the Appearance tab, and select the K2 Options tab. Choose gridlock-k2/gridlock.css from the K2 Scheme drop-down menu and click Update Options.

Hey Eston, Lovely theme! Thanks! Just one question, is it possible to customize the theme on the homepage to display more than 3 posts. We are looking at having one large featured post at the top (like the one that currently exists in ur theme) followed by 6 posts in the bottom column. (the current theme allows only 2 posts). Cheers,
Julien

Hi Sidharth Rao, I think you are talking about the other Gridlock theme, not for K2, but I remember that it was possible to change the theme to obtain what you want in the Main Index Template page by changing some numbers (Presentation > Theme Editor).
For those who are trying to replace the Gridlock K2 header, I have done it by changing the Gridlock.css a bit. First I have uploaded my header in the Gridlock K2 image folder and then in the #header line, I changed to something like this :
#header {
background: #fff url(images/nameofyourheader.jpg) top;
height: XXXpx;
margin-left: 80px !important;
margin-right: 81px !important;
}
Where XXXpx is the height of your header picture + the height of the menu (32 or 33 pixel). For example, Ihave “height:212px;”.
Hope it’ll help…

the problem with the zip file (at least for us pc people) is that there is a box character in the title of the icon file. delete the character and everything unzips fine. it took me a few tries to figure this out.

Most likely a beginner question. But I cannot seem to get the “about” graphic/description to appear on the sidebar? Any suggestions? Love the theme btw.

Still getting the following error message on the site:
WordPress database error: [Not unique table/alias: ‘wp_post2cat’]
SELECT SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS wp_posts.* FROM wp_posts LEFT JOIN wp_post2cat ON (wp_posts.ID = wp_post2cat.post_id) LEFT JOIN wp_post2cat ON ( wp_posts.ID = wp_post2cat.post_id) WHERE 1=1 AND wp_post2cat.category_id IN (1) AND (post_type = ‘post’ AND (post_status = ‘publish’ OR post_status = ‘private’)) AND category_id NOT IN (21,1,25) GROUP BY wp_posts.ID ORDER BY post_date DESC LIMIT 0, 1

If you are using the other version of the theme I just figured this out, you need to go to the presentation page then click on the “Gridlock Options” link to the right of the “Link Editor” link.
Now you will need to fill in the fields that apply to the “about” section, You put in some text in one field, a post slug, which is meant to link to an about page on your site.
That should do it for you.

Same problem as Akuii - with the new version of K2, Gridlok moves the sidebar down to below the last entry. Not found a solution yet, as I’m crap with CSS.
k111
posted 11 months ago
FIXED; Delete the “.secondary” section completely from gridlock.css and your sidebar will be back at the top, and correctly integrated into the K2 theme again. Now, I already admitted I am crap with CSS and have NO IDEA what I just broke - but I can’t find anything broken so for some of us, this will work. If you know what I broke, leave a message and/or fix ;)

Well, the ajax search is completely broken, but it’s also broken while the sidebar is in the wrong place, I think we’re screwed until a new Gridlok version is made =/

Nice theme, but the sidebar is displaces (as stated above), but the ajax search works fone.
veto
posted 9 months, 2 weeks ago
Ok, I got it to work now. Open “gridlock.css” and search for “.secondary” (without the quotes).
Now, where it say “margin: 0 0 20px 637px !important;” change it to “margin: -170 0 20px 637px !important;” (without the quotes).’
This will move the side bar 170 pixels up on the pages.
