About Eston
I’m Eston Bond, a 22-year-old interaction designer living in Palo Alto, California. By day, I work at Facebook, working primarily on growth and mobile projects there. If you’re ever in Palo Alto, e-mail me and say hello. Maybe we can have a beer at The Rose & Crown.
Professional Life
I’ve been programming since I was ten, originally learning QBASIC in elementary school. In high school, I worked for a government contractor writing software for the Palm OS and Windows CE; I also wrote the first commercially-available HTML editor for the Palm OS. I didn’t start seriously in interaction design until some time in late 2004. Even with the late start, aesthetics have always been a fixation of mine; combining that with my love for people and the interactions between them, interaction design is a happy medium. I am lucky enough to be able to exercise what was originally a hobby as a profession, and I’m liking every day of it.
Outside of work at Facebook, I write periodically for O’Reilly Media and used to act as a freelance social media consultant for companies attempting to establish a social presence. For the next few weeks, I’m volunteering to teach a sixth-grade technology class in nearby San Jose as part of the cool Citizen Schools programme.
I’ve never been formally trained in web design or development; my formal education is in Economics at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I graduated with a BA in May 2007. While at Michigan, I gained a deep interest in the role of journalism in new media, being the Managing Online Editor of the independent student newspaper The Michigan Daily for a year and half before I resigned (with some colleagues) after philosophical indifferences. Eventually, after I feel that I’ve completed the work I’ve set out to do here in Silicon Valley (if I ever do,) I plan on going back to school for a Ph.D.
Personal Life
I keep busy for the ten percent of the time I’m not doing something involving social networking, new media or design. I co-founded an electronic dance music group at the University of Michigan and am still actively involved in mashups and music production, currently working with a co-founder on a concept album.
I also spend a lot of weekend time shooting and driving. I am a firearms enthusiast and either shoot handguns or sporting clays every weekend. I also waste a fair amount of money on my car, a 2007 Acura TSX, which becomes progressively modified over time as I explore and master the car at its limits. I’m on Acurazine as Populuxe, where every now and then I’ll chime in with some K-series knowledge.
