San Francisco, Blog Delays, Ads on hyalineskies

From 24 February until 3 March, I’ll be in San Francisco on my Spring Break, staying with a friend in The Mission. While I plan on continuing to blog from afar, there may be days when I’m not checking my e-mail as constantly as I usually do. Since I’ve never actually been to San Francisco, I’m asking people for some advice on where I should go and what I should do. I’ve got nightlife stuff down; aside from that, though, are there any people I should meet? Any tech gatherings I should go to? Upcoming.org has been pretty sparse on such things, although I will be at Ruby Skye to see MSTRKRFT the day before I leave for home.

As anyone who has seen my new MySpace Profile might notice, I listed my location as San Francisco. Without disclosing too many details now, I’m about 90% sure that I will be moving to and working in the Bay Area in May. Barring any total disaster, this means that I’ll be much closer to a lot of the things I blog about here on hyalineskies.

Okay, but this doesn’t explain your terrible posting frequency.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been absolutely awful at keeping a regular posting schedule since this year began. While in some cases I really don’t have a valid excuse, I’ve been working on a variety of other projects that have been consuming my time as of late, including working for O’Reilly as a freelance writer. Meanwhile, college has been surprisingly time-consuming for a second-semester senior, but that issue should be resolving itself shortly after break.

I’ve also been hard at work on some behind-the-scenes features that all hyalineskies readers will eventually see. I have actually been developing hyalineskies 8 and have most of the IA and visual assets locked down; of course, I’ve also redesigned my MySpace profile so I can release my old overlay to the public. Expect to see some really awesome stuff for hyalineskies 8, which should go live on the main site by the end of April. (To put the development time scale into some degree of relativity, ærial took me nearly 5 months to build to completion.)

Meanwhile, my impending relocation to San Francisco has brought up a cornucopia of complexities in my personal life, from figuring out all of the necessary financial issues as well as nailing things down with what I assume will be my eventual employer. Thankfully, they have been by far the most flexible company I have ever dealt with through a recruiting process, and I’m extremely thankful thus far for the way they treat their prospective employees. They really do care about the people going to work for them.

Another new oddity: ads

Starting with hyalineskies 8 in April, hyalineskies will now be a partner for Text Link Ads. The decision to place advertising on hyalineskies has been a long one, starting sometime back in December; most ad networks are too obnoxious to the reader and offer little in terms of revenue in return. Text Link Ads has proven to me to be a very usable common ground between supporting this site and not being awfully obnoxious to the reader; however, I won’t hesitate to pull the ads if they don’t work out well for readers. These ads are placed inline with RSS feeds as well as (in the future) on the site. If there is any serious protest, I will try to find some better way to raise money for the site.

If you’re a potential advertiser, feel free to e-mail me and discuss potential sponsorship opportunities.
